How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Try both | For each pair, check the sum and the product. 4 and 6 make 10 or 24. |
| Products grow fast | A big number is more likely a product; a middle-sized one could be either. |
| Only one works | Exactly one number can be made from two others, in one way. |
| Write the sign | Fill in + or × in the circle of the number sentence. |
Worked example
Find the number made from two others: 4, 6, 24, 31 and 50.
- 1Try 4 and 6: 4 + 6 = 10 is not here, but 4 × 6 = 24 is.
- 2Check the rest: 31 and 50 can't be made from two others here.
- 3Circle 24 and write 4 × 6 = 24.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Why mix addition and multiplication?
- Children have to think about which operation fits, not just run one. It is good review before multi-step problems.
- Is there a version to play on screen?
- Yes. Flip's Number Hunt has the same puzzles as a free game: endlessworksheets.com/games/number-hunt/sums-and-products.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
