What's on the worksheet

How it works: a quick refresher

For the adult at the table. These are the rules the worksheet practices, followed by one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring downRepeat these four steps for each digit of the dividend, left to right.
Write each digit above its placeThe first quotient digit goes above the last digit you used, so the places line up.
Use a zero when it does not goIf the divisor does not fit into the current number, write 0 in the quotient and bring down the next digit.
The remainder is smaller than the divisorIf it is not, the last quotient digit can go up by one.
Check by multiplyingquotient × divisor + remainder should equal the dividend.

Worked example

Find 95 ÷ 4.

  1. Divide: 4 goes into 9 two times. Write 2 above the 9.
  2. Multiply and subtract: 2 × 4 = 8, and 9 − 8 = 1.
  3. Bring down the 5 to make 15. 4 goes into 15 three times. Write 3 above the 5.
  4. 3 × 4 = 12, and 15 − 12 = 3. Nothing is left to bring down, so the remainder is 3.
  5. 95 ÷ 4 = 23 R 3. Check: 23 × 4 + 3 = 95.

Ready-made versions

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why no commas in the dividends?
Long division is worked digit by digit under the bracket, and a comma gets in the way of the working, so the numbers are written without one.
Does the key show the working?
The key shows the quotient and remainder. Check the working with the multiplication step: quotient times divisor, plus remainder, equals the dividend.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
