4th Grade Multi-Digit Addition and Subtraction Worksheets
Free and printable, with a full answer key. Every worksheet is generated fresh, so you can hand a different version to every student.
Adding and subtracting four-, five- and six-digit numbers with the standard column method, including subtracting across zeros, the step that trips up most 4th graders.
Or start with a ready-made version:

What's on the worksheet
- Adding 4-digit numbers
Sums such as 4,768 + 2,957, each with at least one regrouping.
- Subtracting 4-digit numbers
Differences such as 8,412 − 3,586, each with at least one regrouping.
- Subtracting across zeros
Problems such as 5,003 − 1,867 and 7,000 − 2,345.
- Larger numbers
Five- and six-digit addition and subtraction, mixed.
How it works: a quick refresher
For the adult at the table. These are the rules the worksheet practices, followed by one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Line up by place value | Write the numbers right-aligned so ones, tens, hundreds and thousands sit in columns. |
| Work right to left | Add or subtract the ones first, then tens, then hundreds, carrying or regrouping as you go. |
| Regrouping across zeros | In 5,003 − 1,867 you cannot take from a zero, so go to the 5: 5 thousands become 4 thousands, 9 hundreds, 9 tens and 13 ones. |
| Estimate first | Round both numbers to check the answer is the right size: 4,768 + 2,957 is about 5,000 + 3,000 = 8,000. |
Worked example
Find 5,003 − 1,867.
- Ones: 3 is less than 7, and the tens and hundreds are 0, so regroup from the thousands.
- 5,003 becomes 4 thousands, 9 hundreds, 9 tens and 13 ones.
- 13 − 7 = 6, 9 − 6 = 3, 9 − 8 = 1, 4 − 1 = 3.
- 5,003 − 1,867 = 3,136. Check: 3,136 + 1,867 = 5,003.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Why are there commas in the numbers?
- They match how numbers are written in 4th grade textbooks and make large numbers easier to read. Children can ignore them when working the columns.
- Are any answers negative?
- No. The larger number is always on top in subtraction.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
