How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Start at the leftCompare the ones digits first. 4.2 is greater than 3.9, because 4 is greater than 3.
Then the tenthsIf the ones match, compare the tenths. 0.5 is greater than 0.45, because 5 tenths is more than 4 tenths.
Then the hundredthsIf the tenths match, compare the hundredths. 0.37 is less than 0.38.
A missing place is zero0.5 is the same amount as 0.50, and 0.4 is the same amount as 0.40.
More digits can be smaller0.45 has more digits than 0.5, and 0.45 is the smaller number.

Worked example

Compare 0.5 and 0.45.

  1. 1Write 0.5 as 0.50 so both numbers show hundredths.
  2. 2The ones digits match. The tenths digits are 5 and 4.
  3. 35 is more than 4, so 0.50 is greater than 0.45.
  4. 40.5 > 0.45.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why is 0.5 greater than 0.45 when 45 is greater than 5?
The digits after the decimal point are tenths and hundredths, not whole numbers. 0.5 is 5 tenths, which is 50 hundredths. 0.45 is 45 hundredths. 50 is more than 45.
Is 0.4 equal to 0.40?
Yes. The zero on the end of 0.40 means no extra hundredths. It does not change the size. 0.4 and 0.40 are the same amount, so the sign is =.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
