How it works: a quick refresher

For the adult at the table. These are the rules the worksheet practices, followed by one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Line up by place valueWrite the numbers right-aligned so ones, tens, hundreds and thousands sit in columns.
Work right to leftAdd or subtract the ones first, then tens, then hundreds, carrying or regrouping as you go.
Regrouping across zerosIn 5,003 − 1,867 you cannot take from a zero, so go to the 5: 5 thousands become 4 thousands, 9 hundreds, 9 tens and 13 ones.
Estimate firstRound both numbers to check the answer is the right size: 4,768 + 2,957 is about 5,000 + 3,000 = 8,000.

Worked example

Find 5,003 − 1,867.

  1. Ones: 3 is less than 7, and the tens and hundreds are 0, so regroup from the thousands.
  2. 5,003 becomes 4 thousands, 9 hundreds, 9 tens and 13 ones.
  3. 13 − 7 = 6, 9 − 6 = 3, 9 − 8 = 1, 4 − 1 = 3.
  4. 5,003 − 1,867 = 3,136. Check: 3,136 + 1,867 = 5,003.

Ready-made versions

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why are there commas in the numbers?
They match how numbers are written in 4th grade textbooks and make large numbers easier to read. Children can ignore them when working the columns.
Are any answers negative?
No. The larger number is always on top in subtraction.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
