How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Try bothFor each pair, check the sum and the product. 4 and 6 make 10 or 24.
Products grow fastA big number is more likely a product; a middle-sized one could be either.
Only one worksExactly one number can be made from two others, in one way.
Write the signFill in + or × in the circle of the number sentence.

Worked example

Find the number made from two others: 4, 6, 24, 31 and 50.

  1. 1Try 4 and 6: 4 + 6 = 10 is not here, but 4 × 6 = 24 is.
  2. 2Check the rest: 31 and 50 can't be made from two others here.
  3. 3Circle 24 and write 4 × 6 = 24.

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why mix addition and multiplication?
Children have to think about which operation fits, not just run one. It is good review before multi-step problems.
Is there a version to play on screen?
Yes. Flip's Number Hunt has the same puzzles as a free game: endlessworksheets.com/games/number-hunt/sums-and-products.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
