How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
A number beside a letter means multiply3x means 3 times x. If x = 5, then 3x = 15.
Substitute firstReplace every letter with the value you were given, then compute. 3x + 4 when x = 5 becomes 3 × 5 + 4.
Then use the order of operationsMultiply before you add. Parentheses happen before either of those.
Two letters get two valuesIn 4a − b, replace a and b separately. Do not add the letters together first.
The value should match a checkPut the value back in. If the expression was a subtraction, the result on these pages is never negative.

Worked example

Find 3x + 4 when x = 5.

  1. 1Replace x with 5: 3 × 5 + 4.
  2. 2Multiply first: 3 × 5 = 15.
  3. 3Then add: 15 + 4 = 19.
  4. 43x + 4 = 19 when x = 5.

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Do any answers come out negative or as a fraction?
No. The values were chosen so every division comes out even and every result is a whole number, zero or above.
Why do the letters change from problem to problem?
A letter is only a name for the number. x, n, a, and m all work the same way once you substitute.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
