How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| A number beside a letter means multiply | 3x means 3 times x. If x = 5, then 3x = 15. |
| Substitute first | Replace every letter with the value you were given, then compute. 3x + 4 when x = 5 becomes 3 × 5 + 4. |
| Then use the order of operations | Multiply before you add. Parentheses happen before either of those. |
| Two letters get two values | In 4a − b, replace a and b separately. Do not add the letters together first. |
| The value should match a check | Put the value back in. If the expression was a subtraction, the result on these pages is never negative. |
Worked example
Find 3x + 4 when x = 5.
- 1Replace x with 5: 3 × 5 + 4.
- 2Multiply first: 3 × 5 = 15.
- 3Then add: 15 + 4 = 19.
- 43x + 4 = 19 when x = 5.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Do any answers come out negative or as a fraction?
- No. The values were chosen so every division comes out even and every result is a whole number, zero or above.
- Why do the letters change from problem to problem?
- A letter is only a name for the number. x, n, a, and m all work the same way once you substitute.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
