How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Find the place | Underline the digit in the place you are rounding to: the hundreds digit for the nearest 100. |
| Look one place to the right | That digit decides. For the nearest 100 it is the tens digit. For the nearest 1,000 it is the hundreds digit. |
| 5 or more rounds up | This page uses half up. 9,950 to the nearest 100 is 10,000. 150 to the nearest 100 is 200. |
| 4 or less stays | 9,940 to the nearest 100 is 9,900. The tens digit 4 keeps the hundreds digit where it is. |
| A 9 can carry | If you round up and the place you are rounding to is 9, that 9 becomes 0 and the next place goes up. 9,960 to the nearest 100 is 10,000. |
Worked example
Round 9,960 to the nearest 100.
- 19,960 is between 9,900 and 10,000.
- 2The tens digit is 6. A digit of 5 or more rounds up.
- 3The hundreds digit is 9, so rounding up carries into the thousands.
- 49,960 rounds to 10,000.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Which way does a 5 go?
- Up. 65 to the nearest 10 is 70, and 9,500 to the nearest 1,000 is 10,000. Some textbooks call this rounding half up.
- Why is 9,960 to the nearest 100 equal to 10,000 and not 9,900?
- The tens digit is 6, so the hundreds digit rounds up. That hundreds digit is 9, and 9 plus 1 carries. 9,900 would be the answer if the tens digit were 4 or less.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
