How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Groups of a fraction4 × 1/5 means 4 groups of one fifth: 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 + 1/5 = 4/5.
Multiply the numerator3 × 2/7 = (3 × 2)/7 = 6/7. The denominator stays the same.
Order does not matter2/7 × 3 is the same as 3 × 2/7.
More than one whole4 × 2/3 = 8/3. 8 thirds is 2 wholes and 2 thirds left over: 2 2/3.
Whole numbers6 × 2/3 = 12/3 = 4, because 12 thirds make 4 wholes.

Worked example

Find 4 × 2/3. Write the answer as a mixed number.

  1. 1Multiply the whole number by the numerator: 4 × 2 = 8. Keep the denominator: 8/3.
  2. 23 thirds make 1 whole, so 8 thirds is 2 wholes (6 thirds) and 2 thirds left over.
  3. 34 × 2/3 = 2 2/3.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why doesn't the denominator get multiplied too?
The denominator names the size of the pieces. Multiplying by 3 makes three times as many pieces of the same size, so only the number of pieces, the numerator, changes.
My child wrote 8/3 instead of 2 2/3. Is that wrong?
8/3 and 2 2/3 are the same amount. The mixed-number section asks for 2 2/3 to practise converting, but 8/3 shows the multiplication is right.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
