How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Add the numerators | The denominator stays the same. 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8. |
| Subtract the numerators | 5/6 − 1/6 = 4/6, which simplifies to 2/3. |
| Simplify at the end | Divide the numerator and the denominator by a common factor. 2/8 + 2/8 = 4/8 = 1/2. |
| Greater than 1 | 3/4 + 3/4 = 6/4. That is 1 whole and 1/2 left over, written 1 1/2. |
| Regroup a mixed number | 3 1/4 − 1 3/4 needs a whole. 3 1/4 = 2 5/4, and 2 5/4 − 1 3/4 = 1 1/2. |
Worked example
Find 3 1/4 − 1 3/4.
- 11/4 is smaller than 3/4, so regroup 3 1/4 as 2 5/4.
- 2Subtract the fractions: 5/4 − 3/4 = 2/4.
- 3Subtract the whole numbers: 2 − 1 = 1, so the difference is 1 2/4.
- 42/4 simplifies to 1/2. 3 1/4 − 1 3/4 = 1 1/2.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- My child wrote 6/4 instead of 1 1/2. Is that wrong?
- 6/4 and 1 1/2 are the same amount. These problems ask for a mixed number when the answer is greater than 1, and for simplest form, so 1 1/2 is the form to practise.
- Why regroup 3 1/4 before subtracting 3/4?
- You cannot take 3 fourths from 1 fourth. Breaking a whole into 4 fourths makes 5 fourths, and 5 is enough to subtract 3. One whole is left from the 3, along with 2 fourths.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
