How it works: a quick refresher

For the adult at the table. These are the rules the worksheet practices, followed by one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Do the opposite operationAddition and subtraction undo each other; so do multiplication and division.
Keep it balancedWhatever you do to one side of the equation, do to the other side.
6y means 6 times ySo divide both sides by 6: 6y = 42 gives y = 7.
Check by substitutingPut your answer back in: 7 + 8 = 15 confirms x = 7 for x + 8 = 15.

Worked example

Solve m ÷ 5 = 3.

  1. m is being divided by 5, so multiply both sides by 5.
  2. m ÷ 5 × 5 = 3 × 5.
  3. m = 15.
  4. Check: 15 ÷ 5 = 3.

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.

Grade level and standard

Written for 6th grade math (expressions and equations) and aligned to CCSS 6.EE.B.7. It also works as review in later grades.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why do the letters change from problem to problem?
So students learn that the letter is just a name for the unknown number. Any letter works the same way.
Are there negative numbers or fractions?
No. Every number and answer is a whole number, which matches 6th grade. Negative numbers come in the 7th grade two-step equations.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
