How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| How many fit | 2/3 ÷ 1/4 asks how many fourths fit in 2/3. The answer can be greater than 1. |
| Multiply by the reciprocal | Keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second fraction. 2/3 ÷ 1/4 = 2/3 × 4/1. |
| Then simplify | 2/3 × 4/1 = 8/3, which is 2 2/3. |
| A whole number | 3 ÷ 2/5 = 3 × 5/2 = 15/2 = 7 1/2. Write the whole number as a fraction over 1 if that helps. |
| Mixed numbers | Write each mixed number as a fraction greater than 1 before flipping. 2 1/2 = 5/2. |
Worked example
Find 2/3 ÷ 1/4.
- 1Flip the fraction you are dividing by: 1/4 becomes 4/1.
- 2Change the division to multiplication: 2/3 × 4/1.
- 32/3 × 4 = 8/3.
- 48/3 is 2 wholes and 2/3, so 2/3 ÷ 1/4 = 2 2/3.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Why is the answer bigger than 2/3?
- Dividing by 1/4 asks how many fourths fit in 2/3. A fourth is smaller than 2/3, so more than one of them fits. Dividing by a fraction smaller than 1 makes a larger number.
- Is flipping the first fraction a mistake?
- Yes. Only the divisor flips, the fraction after the ÷ sign. 2/3 ÷ 1/4 becomes 2/3 × 4/1, not 3/2 × 1/4. Check by multiplying the answer by 1/4: you should get 2/3 back.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
