How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

To do thisUse this rule
RectangleA = b × h
ParallelogramA = b × h
TriangleA = ½ × b × h
TrapezoidA = ½ × (b₁ + b₂) × h
Heightalways perpendicular to the base

Worked example

A triangle has a base of 9 cm and a height of 6 cm. Find its area.

  1. 1A triangle is half of a parallelogram with the same base and height.
  2. 2The parallelogram's area is 9 × 6 = 54 cm².
  3. 3Half of that is 54 ÷ 2 = 27 cm².

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.

Grade level and standard

Written for 6th grade math (geometry) and aligned to CCSS 6.G.A.1. It also works as review in later grades.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why does the slanted side of a parallelogram not matter?
Area uses the height, which is straight up from the base. Cut the triangle off one end and slide it to the other side, and the parallelogram becomes a rectangle with the same base and height.
Why is the height outside some triangles?
When a triangle has an obtuse angle at the base, the point above the base is past its end. The height is still measured straight down to the line of the base, extended.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
