How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

To do thisUse this rule
Slopem = rise ÷ run = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁)
Slope-intercept formy = mx + b
y-interceptb = where the line crosses the y-axis
Directionup to the right: m > 0; down to the right: m < 0

Worked example

Find the slope of the line through (2, 3) and (6, 11).

  1. 1Rise: 11 − 3 = 8.
  2. 2Run: 6 − 2 = 4.
  3. 3Slope = rise ÷ run = 8 ÷ 4 = 2.

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.

Grade level and standard

Written for 8th grade math (expressions and equations) and aligned to CCSS 8.EE.B.6. It also works as review in later grades.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Does it matter which point I start from?
No, as long as you use the same point first in both the top and the bottom. (3 − 11) ÷ (2 − 6) is −8 ÷ −4 = 2, the same slope.
Why are some slopes written as fractions?
Slope is rise over run, so it is often a fraction. A slope of 2/3 means up 2 for every 3 across. Fractions are given in simplest form.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
