8th Grade Distance Between Two Points Worksheets
Fresh practice, ready to print. Answer key included.
Using the Pythagorean theorem to find the distance between two points: counting the legs on a grid, rounding when the distance is not a whole number, and working from coordinates alone.

What's on the worksheet
- On a grid, whole numbers
Points such as (−3, −2) and (3, 6), 10 units apart.
- On a grid, rounded
Distances such as √29 ≈ 5.4, rounded to the nearest tenth.
- From coordinates
Points too far apart to plot, such as (−4, 7) and (11, 15).
How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Make a right triangle | Draw across from one point and up or down from the other. The segment AB is the hypotenuse. |
| Measure the legs | Across is the difference in x. Up or down is the difference in y. |
| Pythagorean theorem | a² + b² = c², so the distance is √(a² + b²). |
| Signs do not matter | Each leg is a length, so use the size of each difference: from x = −3 to x = 3 is 6. |
| Round at the end | √29 ≈ 5.385, so the distance is about 5.4 units. |
Worked example
Find the distance between A(−4, 7) and B(11, 15).
- 1Across: from x = −4 to x = 11 is 15 units.
- 2Up: from y = 7 to y = 15 is 8 units.
- 3Pythagorean theorem: 15² + 8² = 225 + 64 = 289.
- 4√289 = 17, so AB = 17 units.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Is this the distance formula?
- Yes. The distance formula is the Pythagorean theorem written with coordinates. Drawing the triangle first shows where it comes from, and the answers are the same.
- Why are some answers rounded?
- Most distances between grid points are not whole numbers. √29 is about 5.385, so the rounded section asks for the nearest tenth: 5.4.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
