How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Tax is added onFind the tax, then add it to the price. 6% of $48 is $2.88, so the total is $50.88.
A tip is the percent itselfA 20% tip on $35 is 0.20 × 35 = $7.00. The question asks for the tip, not the bill plus the tip.
Discount comes off25% off $80 is $20 off. The sale price is $80 − $20 = $60.00.
Percent change uses the originalFrom 40 to 50, the change is 10 and the original is 40. 10 ÷ 40 = 25%, an increase.
A decrease uses the same originalFrom 80 to 60, the change is 20. 20 ÷ 80 = 25%, a decrease.

Worked example

A price is $48 and the tax is 6%. Find the total.

  1. 16% of $48 is 0.06 × 48.
  2. 20.06 × 48 = 2.88, so the tax is $2.88.
  3. 3Add the tax to the price: 48 + 2.88 = 50.88.
  4. 4The total is $50.88.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why do money answers show cents, even for $7.00?
The question asks for an amount of money, so the answer is written to the cent. $7.00 means 7 dollars and no extra cents. A percent answer, such as 25%, has no dollar sign.
Is the percent of change based on the new number or the original?
Always the original. From 40 to 50, divide the change by 40, not by 50. Going back from 50 to 40 is a different percent, because the original is then 50.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
