How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Tax is added on | Find the tax, then add it to the price. 6% of $48 is $2.88, so the total is $50.88. |
| A tip is the percent itself | A 20% tip on $35 is 0.20 × 35 = $7.00. The question asks for the tip, not the bill plus the tip. |
| Discount comes off | 25% off $80 is $20 off. The sale price is $80 − $20 = $60.00. |
| Percent change uses the original | From 40 to 50, the change is 10 and the original is 40. 10 ÷ 40 = 25%, an increase. |
| A decrease uses the same original | From 80 to 60, the change is 20. 20 ÷ 80 = 25%, a decrease. |
Worked example
A price is $48 and the tax is 6%. Find the total.
- 16% of $48 is 0.06 × 48.
- 20.06 × 48 = 2.88, so the tax is $2.88.
- 3Add the tax to the price: 48 + 2.88 = 50.88.
- 4The total is $50.88.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Why do money answers show cents, even for $7.00?
- The question asks for an amount of money, so the answer is written to the cent. $7.00 means 7 dollars and no extra cents. A percent answer, such as 25%, has no dollar sign.
- Is the percent of change based on the new number or the original?
- Always the original. From 40 to 50, divide the change by 40, not by 50. Going back from 50 to 40 is a different percent, because the original is then 50.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
