How it works: a quick refresher
For the adult at the table. These are the rules the worksheet practices, followed by one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Same signs: positive | −8 × (−4) = 32, and −32 ÷ (−4) = 8. |
| Different signs: negative | −7 × 6 = −42, and 42 ÷ (−7) = −6. |
| Count the negatives | With several factors, an even number of negatives gives a positive answer and an odd number gives a negative. |
| Size first, then sign | Work out the answer as if both numbers were positive, then apply the sign rule. |
Worked example
Find −2 × 3 × (−5).
- Multiply the sizes: 2 × 3 × 5 = 30.
- Count the negatives: there are two, an even number.
- An even number of negatives makes the answer positive.
- −2 × 3 × (−5) = 30.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Why is a negative times a negative positive?
- One way to see it: multiplying by −1 flips a number to the other side of zero. Doing that twice brings it back to the positive side.
- Do the division problems have remainders?
- No. Every division problem comes out to a whole number.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
