How it works: a quick refresher

For the adult at the table. These are the rules the worksheet practices, followed by one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Same signs: addAdd the numbers and keep the sign: −6 + (−9) = −15.
Different signs: subtractSubtract the smaller size from the larger and use the sign of the larger: −7 + 4 = −3.
Subtracting is adding the opposite5 − (−3) = 5 + 3 = 8, and −8 − 6 = −8 + (−6) = −14.
Picture a number lineAdding a positive moves right, adding a negative moves left.

Worked example

Find −4 − (−9).

  1. Change subtraction to adding the opposite: −4 + 9.
  2. The signs are different, so subtract the sizes: 9 − 4 = 5.
  3. The larger size, 9, is positive, so the answer is positive.
  4. −4 − (−9) = 5.

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.

Grade level and standard

Written for 7th grade math (number system) and aligned to CCSS 7.NS.A.1. It also works as review in later grades.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why are some numbers in parentheses?
A negative number that follows a plus or minus sign is written in parentheses, as in 5 − (−3), so the two signs are not confused.
Does this cover fractions and decimals?
Not yet. These worksheets use whole numbers. The same rules apply to negative fractions and decimals.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
