How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Sharing a fraction1/3 ÷ 4 shares one third into 4 equal parts. Each part is 1/12.
How many fit4 ÷ 1/5 asks how many fifths fit in 4. There are 5 in each whole, so 4 × 5 = 20.
Check with multiplication1/12 × 4 = 4/12 = 1/3, and 20 × 1/5 = 4.
The answer's sizeDividing by a whole number makes a fraction smaller. Dividing by a unit fraction gives a bigger number.

Worked example

Find 3 ÷ 1/4.

  1. 1Ask how many fourths fit in 3.
  2. 2Each whole has 4 fourths.
  3. 33 wholes have 3 × 4 = 12 fourths, so 3 ÷ 1/4 = 12.
  4. 4Check: 12 × 1/4 = 12/4 = 3.

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why is 4 ÷ 1/5 bigger than 4?
Dividing asks how many groups fit. A fifth is small, so many fifths fit in 4: twenty of them. The smaller the piece, the more pieces fit.
Should my child use invert and multiply?
Grade 5 builds the meaning first: sharing a fraction, or counting how many pieces fit. The shortcut comes in grade 6, and it gives the same answers.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
