How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
A ten-frame holds tenTwo rows of five boxes. When every box has a counter, there are 10.
See five at a glanceA full top row is 5. Count on from 5 along the bottom row.
Empty boxes make 10The empty boxes are how many more you need to make 10.
Teen numbers are ten and moreA full frame and 4 more is 10 and 4, which is 14.

Worked example

A ten-frame has 7 counters. How many more make 10?

  1. 1The top row is full: 5. The bottom row has 2 more, so there are 7.
  2. 2Count the empty boxes: 1, 2, 3.
  3. 33 more make 10, because 7 + 3 = 10.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why use ten-frames?
They show numbers as five and some more, and ten and some more. That makes adding to 10, and later place value, much easier to see.
My child counts every counter one by one. Is that OK?
Yes, to begin with. Over time, encourage them to see a full row as 5 straight away and count on from there.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
