How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Start with the small numbersAdd two of the smaller numbers and look for the total in the group.
The answer is never the biggestEvery group has a number bigger than the answer, so check each one.
Cross off as you goIf a number can't be made from two others, put a small line through it.
Check the sentence2 + 4 = 6 only counts if 2, 4 and 6 are all in the group.

Worked example

Find the number made from two others: 2, 4, 6 and 9.

  1. 1Try the two smallest: 2 + 4 = 6.
  2. 26 is in the group, so circle it.
  3. 3Check 9 too: 9 − 2 = 7, 9 − 4 = 5 and 9 − 6 = 3. There is no 7, 5 or 3, so 9 is not made from two others.
  4. 4Write 2 + 4 = 6.

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.
