How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| One number for each shape | Point to each shape once and say one number for it. |
| The last number is how many | When you touch the last shape, the number you say is the answer. |
| Keep track of scattered shapes | Cross off or tap each shape as you count it so none are counted twice. |
| Count by fives | A full row has five. Two full rows are ten: 5, 10, then count on 11, 12, 13. |
Worked example
How many stars? Two rows: five stars, then three stars.
- 1The first row is full: that's 5.
- 2Count on along the second row: 6, 7, 8.
- 3There are 8 stars. Write 8 in the box.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- My child counts some shapes twice. What helps?
- Have them touch each shape as they say its number, or put a small dot on it. Start with the rows, where the order is easy to follow, then try the scattered ones.
- Why rows of five?
- Five is a handy chunk: children learn to see a full row as 5 without counting it, which is the start of counting on and of the ten-frames that come next.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
