How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Across, then up | In (3, 5), start at (0, 0), go 3 across, then 5 up. |
| x comes first | The first number is the x-coordinate (across). The second is the y-coordinate (up). |
| The origin | (0, 0) is where the two axes meet. |
| On an axis | (6, 0) is on the x-axis: across 6, up 0. (0, 4) is on the y-axis: across 0, up 4. |
Worked example
Plot the point A(4, 7).
- 1Start at the origin, (0, 0).
- 2Move 4 units across, along the x-axis.
- 3From there, move 7 units up.
- 4Draw a dot and label it A.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- How can my child remember which number comes first?
- Across before up, like walking into a building before taking the elevator. The x-coordinate (across) always comes first in an ordered pair.
- Why are (3, 5) and (5, 3) different points?
- The order matters. (3, 5) is 3 across and 5 up. (5, 3) is 5 across and 3 up, so the two points are in different places.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
