How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Start at the hundredsCompare the hundreds digits first. 482 is greater than 251 because 4 hundreds is more than 2 hundreds.
Then the tensIf the hundreds match, compare the tens. 372 is greater than 346 because 7 tens is more than 4 tens.
Then the onesIf the hundreds and tens match, compare the ones. 428 is greater than 425.
= means every digit matches350 = 350. A bigger-looking ones digit does not matter when the other digits already differ.

Worked example

Compare 346 and 372.

  1. 1Both numbers have 3 hundreds.
  2. 2The tens digits are 4 and 7. 7 is more than 4.
  3. 3372 is greater than 346. The ones digits are not needed.
  4. 4346 < 372.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet code printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why not start at the ones digit?
The hundreds digit is worth the most. 199 is less than 200, even though 199 has larger tens and ones.
Do equal numbers show up?
Yes, in the mixed section. The other sections always use two different numbers, so the sign is < or >.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
