How it works: a quick refresher
For the adult at the table. These are the rules the worksheet practices, followed by one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Know the doubles | 1 + 1 through 9 + 9. They anchor everything else. |
| Near doubles | 7 + 8 is one more than 7 + 7, so it is 15. |
| Make a ten | 9 + 5: move 1 from the 5 to the 9, giving 10 + 4 = 14. |
| Fact families | 8 + 6 = 14 means 6 + 8 = 14, 14 − 6 = 8 and 14 − 8 = 6. |
| Practise little and often | A few minutes a day beats one long session. Retire facts that come instantly. |
Worked example
Find 13 − 8 without counting.
- Think of the addition fact: 8 + ? = 13.
- 8 + 2 = 10, and 10 + 3 = 13, so 8 + 5 = 13.
- So 13 − 8 = 5.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Should I time these?
- Once a child is accurate, a gentle time goal helps build recall. Compare a child with their own last attempt, not with others.
- Which facts are hardest?
- Usually the ones with 7, 8 and 9 that cross ten, such as 8 + 7 and 15 − 8. The near-doubles section targets several of them.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
