How it works: a quick refresher
The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Line up hundreds, tens, and ones | Write the numbers in three columns and start at the ones. |
| Regroup when adding | If a column adds to 10 or more, write the ones digit of that sum and carry 1 to the next column. |
| Regroup when subtracting | If the top digit is smaller, take 1 from the column to its left and add 10 to the digit you are on. |
| The sum stays under 1000 | These pages never make a thousands digit. |
| Check a difference by adding | The answer plus the bottom number should equal the top number. |
Worked example
Find 542 − 217.
- 1Ones: 2 is less than 7, so regroup. The 4 tens become 3 tens, and the ones become 12.
- 212 − 7 = 5. Write 5 in the ones place.
- 3Tens: 3 − 1 = 2. Hundreds: 5 − 2 = 3.
- 4542 − 217 = 325. Check: 325 + 217 = 542.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- How is this different from the grade 3 fluency pages?
- These pages teach the steps one kind at a time, including problems that do not regroup. The grade 3 pages are a fluency review: regrouping in two places, and subtracting across a zero.
- Will any answer be 1000 or more?
- No. Every sum is 999 or less, and every difference is a positive whole number.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
