How it works: a quick refresher
For the adult at the table. These are the rules the worksheet practices, followed by one problem worked from start to finish.
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Line up the places | Ones under ones and tens under tens, then always start with the ones. |
| Regroup when adding | If the ones add to 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 ten to the top of the tens column. |
| Regroup when subtracting | If the top ones digit is smaller, take 1 ten from the tens column and add 10 to the ones. |
| Check subtraction by adding | The answer plus the number you took away should give the top number. |
Worked example
Find 52 − 17.
- Ones: 2 is less than 7, so regroup. Take 1 ten from the 5 tens, leaving 4 tens, and make 12 ones.
- 12 − 7 = 5. Write 5 in the ones place.
- Tens: 4 − 1 = 3. Write 3 in the tens place.
- 52 − 17 = 35. Check: 35 + 17 = 52.

Common questions
- Is there an answer key?
- Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
- Do any answers go over 100?
- No. Every sum is 99 or less, and every difference is positive.
- My child calls it carrying and borrowing. Is that the same thing?
- Yes. Many schools now say regrouping, because it describes what happens: a ten becomes 10 ones, or 10 ones become a ten.
- How many different versions are there?
- About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
- Are the worksheets free?
- Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
