How it works: a quick refresher

The rules this worksheet practices, then one problem worked from start to finish.

StrategyHow it works
Line up the placesOnes under ones and tens under tens. A one-digit number goes in the ones column.
Add the ones firstIf the ones make 9 or less, write that digit and do not carry.
Then add the tensAdd the tens digits. Nothing is carried, so write that digit as it is.
Adding tens does not change the ones46 + 30 keeps the 6 ones. Only the tens digit changes: 4 tens + 3 tens = 7 tens.
Stay under 100Every sum on these pages is 99 or less.

Worked example

Find 46 + 3.

  1. 1Ones: 6 + 3 = 9. That is less than 10, so write 9 and carry nothing.
  2. 2Tens: 4 + 0 = 4. Write 4.
  3. 346 + 3 = 49.

Ready-made versions

Three fixed versions you can link to or share. Each is a PDF with its own answer key.

Grade level and standard

Written for 1st grade math (place value) and aligned to CCSS 1.NBT.C.4. It also works as review in later grades.

Common questions

Is there an answer key?
Yes. Every worksheet has a matching answer key with each answer worked on the same grid or layout as the question. The worksheet ID printed at the bottom of each page pairs a sheet with its key.
Why does nothing on this page need carrying?
Grade 1 builds the column habit first. Regrouping, when a column makes 10 or more, comes next, on the within-100 pages.
Can the sum be 100 or more?
No. Every sum is 99 or less, and no column regroups.
How many different versions are there?
About a million per skill. Each time you press the button the problems are generated fresh, so you can print a different version for every student, a retake, or another night of practice.
Are the worksheets free?
Yes. They are free to print and copy for your home or classroom, with no sign-up.
